Dr. James A. Purvis is a former President of the Georgia Psychological Association. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and in Social Psychology from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He completed his baccalaureate degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Purvis has been in private practice since 1990, treating individuals, couples, adolescents, and families.

Among the variety of issues for which Dr. Purvis provides treatment are mood and anxiety disorders, interpersonal relationship difficulties, marital issues, alcohol and chemical dependency, anger and stress management, career development, adjustment to life changes, and reaction to loss and bereavement.

The treatment interventions employed by Dr. Purvis include individual therapy (psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral), couples therapy, family therapy, chemical dependency assessment, and psychological testing.

Before entering private practice, Dr. Purvis worked for six years as Staff Psychologist for the Substance Dependency Program and as the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team Director of the Psychiatric Crisis Stabilization Service at the Georgia Mental Health Institute. In past years, he also provided family therapy as a Behavior Specialist for the Child and Adolescent Treatment Program at the Gwinnett County Mental Health Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Dr. Purvis is Board Certified in the treatment and evaluation of alcohol and psychoactive substance use disorders by the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology. He is a Fellow of the Georgia Psychological Association and a Member of the American Psychological Association.
